Reading List
Some of my highly recommended books for travel enthusiasts. The last few don’t deal with travel but are quick reads great for reading on a plane, train or beach.
In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson
Bryson manages to cram in a ton of factual and trivial information in this very humorous narrative about his travels through Oz.
On the Road by Jack Kerouac
The travellers’ bible. After reading this I went on a 2,700 mile road trip across America. You’ve been warned.
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
Krakauer pieces together the mesmerizing real-life story of a 20-something college grad who abandoned normal life to pursue a life “off the grid” in the Alaskan wilderness.
Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions by Ben Mezrich
Not the best written book, but a great story and definitely a page turner. Almost guaranteed to see someone reading this on a plane to Vegas…
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto by Chuck Klosterman
Insightful essays full of pop culture references, ranging from Saved by the Bell to Pamela Anderson. I love everything I’ve read by Klosterman, but this is by far my favorite.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
Captivating autobiographical account of Eggers’ life raising his little brother after both of their parents die within months of one another. He somehow manages to find humor in heartwrenching subject matter. Probably one of the most touching and interesting books I’ve ever read.
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
I laughed out loud through most of this collection of autobiographical essays. The true gems are the stories about his father and his observations on American life.
