Four Cans of Black Beans, Four Automatic Weapons…and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

I almost peed my pants twice this evening. The first time was when I spotted Goya black beans at the Metro Grocer in the Marrickville Shopping Centre (make a note of that, fellow Sydney black bean enthusiasts). So yes, I nearly peed myself over the sight of can after can of that glorious blue label I thought I wouldn’t be seeing for another 9 months. I barely blinked at the $3.49 price tag and ended up buying 4 cans, then squealed to Mandi for the next hour about it. It’s the little things, people.

Goya

.

Incident number two of almost peeing my pants happened while we were walking home from the above-mentioned shopping centre, swinging my bag full of black beans, when a dark SUV pulled up next to a car right in front of us and four guys in bullet-proof vests jumped out. All four of them had huge automatic weapons which they pointed at some poor guy in his car. It appears it was the wrong dude though (10 to 1 odds that guy shit himself), because as soon as we processed what was going on, they jumped back in the SUV and sped away. Mandi and I just stood on the sidewalk making uneasy noises while we watched this whole thing happen. We were the only other people on the street. We didn’t run, we didn’t duck, we just stood there being completely useless in the face of danger. All I could think was, “I THOUGHT SHIT LIKE THIS DOESN’T HAPPEN IN AUSTRALIA!” When we got home, Mandi called the police station and they were just running some sort of exercise (!!!!). I’m gonna be so pissed if I get shot before I eat these black beans.

Black beans are such a rare find in this country arent they? Its the little things I took for granted back in the states… One would have thought I was on a search and rescue mission the first time I went in search of black beans! I went to so many stores, and was surprised to find out that I was speaking a foreign language, as most people had no clue what I was asking for. In fact, I think I jumped up and down in joy when I finally found them.

As for the car incident.. goodness girl.. must have given you quite a shock! I think I would have had the same reaction!

Despite your run in with the machine gun toting death crew, you’re far less likely to get shot here than you are back in the States. So, savor those frijoles.
